The story of The Snow Queen
Long ago, in an old town, there lived two great friends: Kai and Gerda. They lived in neighbouring houses right under the roof and shared a little garden where wonderful roses grew. It lay on a wide board that served as a bridge from one window to the other. All summer the children spent their time in this castle in the air. When the cold came and winter set in, Kai visited Gerda and they told each other tales about the Snow Queen, the beautiful ice queen of the far north.
In those days the world was not only inhabited by people. Small, wicked trolls lived beside them. They were wicked because they had no home of their own, as people do. One day they stole the magic ice mirror from the Snow Queen herself. The heart of anyone who looked into it even once turned into cold ice. The trolls ran about everywhere with the mirror and finally wanted to reach the sky. Higher and higher they flew, until the mirror suddenly slipped from their hands, fell to earth and shattered into pieces. What came of it? You will see on stage.
The ballet is based on the fairy tale The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Andersen.
